Flowering Plants for an Apartment Patio Spring Refresh

Well, it’s probably no surprise to you that the first thing I think of when I want to spruce up my tiny patio is flowering plants!

You can add a lot of color (think yellows and purples and more) or a little bit of color (think ALL white flowers) to make your patio reflect your vibe for the season!

Last year, I opted for pinks/yellows/whites on my spring patio. However, a couple summers ago, I opted for all white flowers on the porch. Both brought joy to my heart!

As you can see, purple and yellow are my colors of choice this season. They just seemed to sing to me when I was shopping at the Home Depot nursery!

What colors are your go-to colors for spring flowers?

Use Different Containers to Add Interest

My container of choice is a terra cotta pot(s). And I’m NOT talkin’ your mama’s clay pots here!

Terra cotta containers and planters come in an array of sizes, shapes, colors (yep) and even have decorative elements.

I love the ‘patina’ look that has appeared on these terra cotta pots.

And of course, the little ‘terrazzo’ pot joined the patio a few seasons ago… it housed this tiny succulent…

Which now has found a home in my large terra cotta pot! What a difference a year makes!

I need to figure out how to get this succulent to grow higher, instead of just outward… Tips in the comments, please!

You can pick up some inexpensive galvanized/metal containers at the Dollar Store… These came with a tray and three pots for $3! Here is something similar, but a ‘bit’ more expensive.

It will be fun to see these metal pots age while braving the outside elements.

How to Refresh Your Apartment Patio for Spring -Add Special Elements

Do you have a window box somewhere on the outside of your home? Well, if you can’t add a little window box to your small apartment window, think about adding one to your patio rails! You can pick up one this time of year, usually on sale, at Hobby Lobby.

These sweet little white flowers with yellow centers look like daisies. And, of course, I forgot to write down the name before I threw away the containers!

Adding some natural colored rafia straw adds a bit more ‘cozy’ to the box of containers, and adds another texture element, too!

Another surprise element is adding some cute little spring birds… or anything that reminds you of spring in your garden!

That succulent started out as a cutting from another larger plant… I love watching succulent change and grow!

Apartment Patio Spring Refresh – Add Some Nighttime Sparkle

Don’t you love fairy lights? They seem to just add some extra ‘umph’ to just about any decor element.

Well, why not add some twinkle lights to your patio, too?! These ivy garlands not only look great during the day, but add a couple AA batteries to them, and they add some sparkly joy to your patio garden, too!

These twinkle light garlands (I used two) were $4/ea at the 99 Cent Store.

And they look so pretty hanging over the window box. (You can grab a boatload of these ivy garlands on Amazon for even less!)

A Couple More Tips for How to Refresh Your Apartment Patio for Spring

Remember, it’s easy to get these plants from your local big box hardware store’s nursery area. Personally, I prefer Home Depot. BUT, you can go to your local specialty nursery and have a lot more to choose from!

The yellow and purple flowers in the large pot came together… two for the price of one!

Petunias are super budget-friendly and they grow profusely during the spring and summer!
